At this year’s MR Fest (My Radio Festival), San Marcos’ very own Kabomba! will be making their second appearance at the festival by filling Superfly’s Lonestar Music Emporium with “gypsy-funk-punk” sounds.

The seven piece band sprung up from San Marcos in August 2009 when members Bryce Gorski, Neal Denton, Matt Schuster and the original drummer were all in a philosophy of arts class at Texas State. The members soon discovered they all shared something in common–the pure enjoyment of making music.

The following summer, Matt and Kabomba!’s original drummer took a trip to Costa Rica where the two resolved to bring together every music-maker they knew into a room to “jam” together. Upon their return to San Marcos, they did as previously planned.

After about three or four hours of jamming, the band said “Hey, so do yall wanna start a band?” Therefore, the band Kabomba! was born, who’s name derives from a unique plant, the Cabomba, which flowers underwater in Spring Lake.

Today, Kabomba! consists of a horn section, bass, drums and a couple of guitars and vocalists. The horn section consists of members, Steve Trinkl, trombone, Nick Steger, saxophone, and Annie Linders, trumpet player. On bass there is Neal Denton and on drums we have Talley Barnes, the original trombonist of the band. Last but never least, the guitarists/ vocalists of Kabomba!, who put voices to their spirited songs, are Bryce Gorski and Matt Schuster.

This wide assortment of instruments sound as if they had seemingly chosen the members who play them; creating their unique, spirited sound that Bryce Gorski describes as, “Taking a sack of bouncy balls and throwing them down the stairs.”

Kabomba! enjoys being able to give back to the San Marcos community by bringing people together to enjoy music, while being engaged in fun antics such as costume wearing and group choral parts. They have delivered this sense of community and animation to areas all over Texas and have released it in their debut album (2011), a live album in 2012, and will be releasing a second album in the near future.
