San Marcos Arts Advocacy

In part of National Arts and Humanities Month, the arts commission of San Marcos held its second annual San Marcos Arts Advocacy reception. The event was open to the public and was commemorated in order to celebrate the work of arts from individuals who have made an impact in the community. Kelvon Hanson, chair of the San Marcos Arts Commission talks about why the city celebrates the work of these individuals.

“Primarily is to recognize individuals and organizations in the community who have contributed significantly to our community and helped encourage arts and humanities culture along with events in the community. As a side bar, it is also to bring awareness of arts in San Marcos to community and let people know we have a thriving art community here in San Marcos.”

One of the recipients of the night was Kyle Mylius who is the owner of Root Cellar Café. Mr. Mylius displays art from all aroundthe community in his restaurant in order for people to recognize the art and achievements individuals have done. Mylius describes what it is like to be recognized at the arts advocacy reception.

“It’s a very humbling surprise tonight to be given this award. Honestly, I feel privileged to be in a community with such amazing artist and musicians and actors, so for me to be considered as part of this and someone who supports the community its one of the greatest recognitions I’ve ever had.”

Jerry Kimmel and Kent Finlay were also recognized as part of the reception. The San Marcos Arts Commission plans to continue recognizing the work of individuals who have made an impact in the community through their artistic performance and plan to spread awareness of what goes on in the community. On the second Saturday of each month, the arts commission host a programs called “Art Unhitched” in order to present the city with various artists and the work they have accomplished.
