Due to the sudden death of Phillip Seymour Hoffman, I’d like to dedicate this episode to him. But I’d like to just talk about him for what he was, an actor, one with an unlimited range of emotional depth. And he never seemed to give in to the glitzy superficial side of Hollywood, he dressed like a regular dude. He looked like a regular guy. He was an every-man who wasn’t into it for the glamour but for his complete love of the craft.

So, here comes the hard part where I have to cherry pick from his insane range of performances. The
one that really stands out to me, and maybe my favorite of all of his performances is when he played
Scotty in Boogie Nights, one of my favorite movies. Even though he’s a supporting role, every scene he’s
in, you honestly can’t take your eyes off him. Scotty, the introverted, shy, awkward, sexually ambiguous
boom operator. It’s a performance that can make you laugh as easily as it can bring you to tears. Check
out this clip. Scotty tries to seduce an off guard mark Wahlberg. Wahlberg rejects him.

You know it can be difficult to play drunk when you’re acting. It so easy to come off as over the top and goofy. But he doesn’t over do it at all here. He’s kind of subtle about it and that’s what makes it all
the more heartbreaking. You can hear his embarrassment in his voice. So you take a role like that and compare to the crazy Rock Critic from Almost Famous or the crazy L. Ron Hubbard type leader from the Master and you see why he deserves all the acclaim that he gets. Look I could talk forever about how diverse his range was and how devoted he was as an actor, but why not hear from the man himself? In this clip taken from a Charlie Rose interview from 2012, Hoffman talks about his process as an actor and
how he makes each character different and unique.

So, when I think about Hoffman I think about a guy who was completely devoted to what he did. I think
for aspiring actors out there I think he’s someone to look up to. Even outside the world of acting and
Hollywood, he was a guy who gave full commitment to everything he did. And that’s something to be
admired. Philip Seymour Hoffman, you will be missed!
