For Texas State University students who are from the Dallas area, the start of 2015 included not only going back to school, but earthquakes that rattled the city as the new year began.

The beginning of the new year got off to a shaky start as Irving, Texas experienced a series of earthquakes with the most recent happening last month.

On January 26th Irving’s ground shook throughout the day as four earthquakes occurred during a span of roughly seven hours. Three of the four earthquakes had magnitudes ranging in the twos while the other had a 3.0 magnitude, according to the U.S. Geological survey.

Texas State University Geography Professor Rene DeHon said there are many old fault lines along the Dallas area but said the fault lines alone aren’t causing the earthquakes.

Though most of these earthquakes are not serious enough to cause damage, DeHon said he thinks this is occurring now because of injection wells to dispose of waste.

“Start pumping fluids in the ground, they lubricate old fault zones or earthquake zones and things can move a little bit easier,” DeHon said. “Stress is building up on them over time, gt some lubrication in there and they start moving a little bit.”

Texas State University freshman elementary education major, Sara Honeycutt from Flower Mound said having never felt an earthquake before, she was shocked when it happened.

“I was at my desk and the computer started shaking and then all of the sudden everything around us started shaking,” Honeycutt said. “We were in a an office so the filing cabinets started shaking and the lights started shaking.”

Despite San Marcos sitting on a fault zone, DeHon said the city is unlikely to experience and earthquakes without injections close to the area.
