Playlist: Intro to Twee

To continue my playlist series (the first of which showcased the shoegaze genre), I will be discussing twee.

Twee is a music genre that started in the United Kingdom during the 80s, characterized by jangly guitars, pop melodies and sugary vocals. While it is highly influenced by DIY punk ideologies, it differs as twee is less harsh and angsty.

There are the original twee bands, including The Wake and The Pastels based across the pond, groups such as Beat Happening and Tiger Trap that popped up in the United States after the initial rise of twee in the UK and more modern-day bands such as Belle & Sebastian and Camera Obscura.

Twee is such a fun genre, because it’s simplistic and happy. It encompasses many moods, but it is absolutely perfect for the spring time. It’s a cute, symmetrical genre that evokes images of Wes Anderson films and Zooey Deschanel.
