In the last couple weeks, the Texas State Bobcat Football team has announced that they will be playing Colorado (2017) and SMU (2019, 2020) in the upcoming seasons. The Colorado game will be a ‘one-and-done’ matchup up in Boulder, Colorado, while the SMU games will be a ‘home-and-home’ series where each team will have a game at home. The two announcements fall in line with Texas State’s recent trend of scheduling non-conference matchups, versus both in-state teams and power-five teams.

The trend Texas State has been showing with their non-conference scheduling should excite the fan base of San Marcos. Not only will there be plenty of opportunities to develop In-State rivalries in the near future, but there will also be opportunities to surprise the country and upset some of bigger schools that play in the power-five conferences.

In-state games can be big matchups for the teams involved because they’re usually competing over the same recruits, so the outcome can sway a few recruit’s opinions here and there. Some of Texas State’s future in-state, non-conference games include: Prairie View A&M (2015), Houston (2015, 2016), SMU (2019, 2020) and UTSA (2017, 2018 & 2020-2025). Something to really watch for down the road is that UTSA matchup. With 7 matchups in 8 years, you could easily see a new rivalry brew between the Bobcats and Roadrunners.

When you play in a smaller conference like the Sun Belt, it can be really easy to go completely unnoticed, from a national standpoint. That’s why it’s exciting to see the Bobcats consistently scheduling opponents from the top conferences in the nation; opponents who the ‘cats will be under-dogs against. It’s a chance for the Bobcats to make some noise on a more national stage.
