Texas State Basketball Welcomes Grad Assistant Taleya Mayberry

Starting this season, the Texas State women’s basketball team will be adding Taleya Mayberry to the staff as a graduate assistant. Mayberry brings five years of coaching to the Bobcats. After working with Playing With Purpose as a basketball coach and trainer. Mayberry was the assistant coach for three of six PWP AAU teams and helped with the coordination of PWP boys basketball leagues as well.

“I’m really excited to bring Taleya Mayberry to our program as a graduate assistant,” said head coach Zenarae Antoine. “I remember watching her as a high school student at Booker T. Washington High School in Tulsa when I was at the University of Arkansas, and she was a fierce competitor.”

Mayberry also adds a dense playing career coming to San Marcos. A 2013 graduate from the University of Tulsa, Mayberry left the program ranking second all-time in program history with 1,742 points and 1,129 minutes played which is first in school history. Two-time Conference USA First-Team selection and All-C-USA Freshman Team selection, as a senior in 2013, Mayberry was C-USA Tournament Most Valuable Player. She broke the C-USA Tournament scoring record while leading the Tulsa Golden Hurricane to a conference championship her senior year as well.

“The one thing that people will say about Taleya is that she’s a competitor and a hard worker,” added Antoine. “Her joining our program will not only help our student-athletes, but she will also help our staff as well. Taleya’s energy, passion, and bloodline for the game of basketball runs really deep.”

Mayberry’s roots are in basketball. Her father, Lee, played for the Milwaukee Bucks and Vancouver Grizzles professionally ’92-’99. He never missed a regular season game his first four years in the NBA, playing in 328 consecutive games. He was also apart of the US National Team in the 1990 FIBA World Championship when the team won a bronze medal.

Mayberry played professionally in Bambertg, Germany in August ’13 – April ’14 and Reykjavik, Iceland December ’14-April ’15. She is currently earning her master’s degree in mass communications.
