Lisa Prewitt Discusses Students at City Council Debate

City Council member Lisa Prewitt said Texas State students are important to the San Marcos community at last night’s City Council debate.

KTSW hosted a San Marcos City council debate last night at the Centro Cultural Hispano de San Marcos. Place 5 candidates Frank Arredondo and Scott Gregson attended the debate as well as Place 6 candidate Melissa Derrick and current Place 6 holder Shane Scott.

The candidates responded to issues such as the fluoridation of the San Marcos water supply, city parks and the growing enrollment at Texas State. All four candidates said that Texas State students are important to the City of San Marcos. San Marcos City Council place 1 holder Lisa Prewitt also attended the debate and said she was pleased with how the candidates responded to the issues presented. Prewitt said she believes Texas State students should be more involved in the City Council elections.

“I think one of the biggest challenges is getting the message across to students, yes we are here, many of us are here to protect our neighborhoods so the residents we have will want to stay here because a lot of them are moving away. We want to retain students to stay in San Marcos, we don’t want them to finish their career in San Marcos or their residency when they graduate. We want them to know that we’re serious about retaining them and their successes in San Marcos.”

Lisa Prewitt said that although City Council is working to make the neighborhoods a peaceful environment for San Marcos residents she still hopes that Texas State students remain a part of the effort to make San Marcos a better place for the middle generation and the generations to come.

“It’s important that we keep that young culture and thought in San Marcos. I’d love to see more Texas State students getting involved and coming in and talking about issues.”

Lisa Prewitt hopes that students will choose San Marcos as their home and the community in which to start a family in.
