There are two types of people in the world. The ones that love the outdoors and being active and the ones that literally cringe when someone mentions the word exercise. I so happen to be the second type of person.
It’s important to stay hydrated when you’re working out. Be sure to bring a water bottle with you. Photo by Megan Bandstra.
Throughout my time here at Texas State I managed to convince myself that simply walking around campus through the day was enough, and I didn’t have to work out more than that. I was wrong. Having an active lifestyle is incredibly important, and walking around campus doesn’t cut it.
If you’re not a cardio lover (or a lover of any type of activity that involves moving) here are a few tips that I recently added into my life to make being active much easier and enjoyable.
Wear comfortable shoes.
Nobody is going to want to skip the campus bus and walk across campus in flip flops. I found that wearing running shoes, or any type of sneakers, made walking more acceptable. If I’m wearing sandals or any type of open toed shoe, I’m not even going to think about walking across campus. However, if I’m in comfortable shoes that provide support, I’m much more willing to do it.
Find a dog.
Do you hate running? Your dog won’t. Take your dog, or a friend’s, for a jog and they’ll help keep you going. Photo by Janessa Rutiaga.
I totally understand that not everyone wants a dog, or is even a dog person, but they are amazing at getting you moving. They’re usually so excited about things, so taking them for walks makes it a little more enjoyable. If you don’t have one, then do your friend a favor and ask to take theirs out for a walk. I promise, they won’t mind.
If not a dog, then a friend.
For the most part, I feel like everyone wants to start jogging, but they never do. If you have problems staying consistent, then rope a friend into it and get them to start jogging/running with you. That way you can have some good company and you’ll have someone to push you when you feel like giving up.
Try Biking.
In the end, jogging isn’t for everyone. This doesn’t mean that you can’t do cardio, it just means you need a different kind. Biking is a good change; it still gives your heart a good workout and it’s easier to fit into your schedule. Instead of driving places, you can choose to ride your bike there. That way you’re not only getting in a little workout, but you’re also being green in the process.
Whatever you choose to do, at least do something. It’s so important to your health. Even if you feel like you’re young and you don’t have to worry about your heart’s health, you do. Working out doesn’t have to be all bad. Make yourself that amazing playlist, rope in friends and reward yourself. You’re doing this for you.
