As February passes and March approaches, we notice that days grow longer and college grows harder. The only thing that is keeping us going is Spring Break, which comes attached to March. To some, Spring Break is a well-needed week of vacation at the beach that includes the entire college community. To others, this week is specifically dedicated to one thing and one thing only, South By Southwest (SXSW).

South By Southwest is an annual week-long event during March that has been taking place in Austin, TX, since 1987. According to the SXSW website, it all started with a group of people in Austin that believed there was so much talent within the city, both creatively and musically, which the outside world had no recognition of.

With this in mind, they created an event that would allow a close-up view to the city and its hidden talents in the areas of music and innovation, thus beginning SXSW.

Since SXSW’s startup, each year has grown more and more advanced, even adding film and innovation into what used to be a music oriented event. As for talent, special keynote speakers from all around are brought to provide insight on their job. From local company owners providing business tips to Facebook creator Mark Zuckerberg in 2008.

Of course, for crowd appeal, there is a list of notable mentions that have participated throughout SXSW’s history, such as: Johnny Cash in 1994,  Quentin Tarantino in 1997 and even former President Barack Obama who attended the 2016 SXSW event. That is just some celebrities on the list; sound like a must-go event yet?

Along with everyone being able to visit and discover great talents at SXSW, Internships and Volunteer opportunities are available in large numbers for those interested. You might want to consider this option since it also comes with special access into SXSW premium content that includes keynote speaker events, film screening, music shows, parties and much more!

Spring break ’17 doesn’t have to be a usual college experience at the beach with booze. Make it something exciting and special!
