Richter’s Antler Cafe, which customers call The Antler, is a nice little restaurant northeast of San Antonio which never fails to fill up with customers. This restaurant might feel a little backwoods to some, however they do everything high class. Anyone passing through this part of Texas should stop at The Antler to enjoy some good home cookin’.

The Food

The Antler has a wide variety of food on its menu. Some dishes they serve include: pork chops, fried chicken steak, burgers and even frog legs! While visiting this restaurant with my family, my dad tried to get me to try some of his frog legs, but being the picky eater I am I stuck to my burger (I will try the frog legs next time). Despite not trying frogs legs for the first time, I got to eat one of the most delightful burgers I have ever sunk my teeth into. The Richter Burger is an oversized burger topped off with spicy jalapeños and a fried egg. The texture of the jalapeños give the burger a satisfying crunch while also providing just enough heat to satisfy most Texans. The fried egg however is what brings this burger together. The runny yolk causes the entire burger to literally drip with flavor. I would describe the Richter Burger as the one burger a vegan would eat on a cheat day. Seriously though, go try out The Antler’s food.

The Atmosphere

True to its name The Antler Cafe has an antler theme. Antlers literally cover part of the restaurants ceiling. The backwoods theme is an adequate theme for this restaurant because it represents the surrounding community well. Many of The Antler’s customers can be described as country folk, so the antler theme sits well with them. Here is a helpful hint which would be good to know before going to the Antler: be early. This restaurant almost always has an hour-long wait. An hour long wait for hungry guys like me feels like an eternity. So, make sure the hostess writes down your party’s name and then prepare to wait. For people with kids, or people who are kids at heart, I recommend playing some waiting games. Click here to view some fun waiting games to play that will not only make time go by faster, but limit the amount of complaining impatient people in your party might say.

The Antler’s relationship with people in and around Bulverde is similar to that of the one Whataburger has with Texas. People love it. I highly recommend checking them out. But plan to get there early, the Antler always has a long line.
