It is a new semester which means new professors, new classmates and new opportunities to be your best self. For many, this is the start of a completely fresh chapter in their lives, and that can be nerve-racking. The good news is that almost everyone has felt that way at one point or another. College is part of becoming an adult, and it is important to find balance in your life.

Here are five tips for managing a crazy new environment:

Tip #1: Invest in a planner

Whether you prefer creating a planner by hand or buying one from a store, investing in a planner is an essential part of being a college student. If you are someone who finds it necessary to note everything you need to complete for the week, a planner is the perfect tool. Not only does it keep you on top of your work, there is also a sense of satisfaction that comes with completing a task; it can keep you from procrastinating throughout the semester.

Tip #2: Escape through music

Music is always a good form of escapism. After a hard day, there is nothing quite like snuggling into bed with some good tunes. Take a few moments to allow your body and mind to rest, to really focus your breathing and the peace and quiet of your space. You may find that a couple minutes to yourself with nothing but your music is enough to get you energized and back on your feet.

Tip #3: Keep your priorities in check

As a college student, it is important to take your school responsibilities seriously. It can be tempting to skip a class or two, procrastinate on homework, or turn in an assignment that you know isn’t your best work. While college is about having fun and experiencing new things, it helps to take some time to reflect on your priorities. Take advantage of what college has to offer, learn as much as you can and find something you enjoy. It is important to try your best on all fronts. Get ahead in your classes by completing your classwork before the due date so you can stay caught up with your responsibilities and have free time–and who doesn’t love free time?

Tip #4: Try, try, and try again

Failure is everywhere; however, that shouldn’t stop you from trying new things. Maybe you haven’t danced since you were five-years-old, but that new dance club on campus seems like something you’d actually be interested in. One of the things that might be holding you back could be the fear of failure. If that’s the case, throw caution to the wind and just try! As cliché as it sounds, you never really know until you try. Life stops for no one, so why not go for it?

Tip #5: Have fun!

Balancing a social life and school may be incredibly difficult but not impossible. Maintaining balance in every aspect of your life is important, but so is having fun. Take that yoga class, visit that bookstore, go dancing with your group, the possibilities are endless. Find the time to do the things you love with the people you love.

NFL Season Predictions

By Garrett McGinley Web Content Contributor Oh fall, that magical season when temperatures supposedly drop, foliage changes and we ritualistically gather around the television to watch young men in colorful uniforms suffer traumatic brain injuries in real time. The National Football League (NFL) has had a rough go of it lately with concerns about player safety, asinine rule changes, brazenly incompetent leadership, allegations of blackballing players for political beliefs, mass […]
