The women’s basketball team lost to the UT Arlington Mavericks on Saturday by a score of 68-53, marking their third straight loss. The Bobcats got off to a slow start, only scoring six points in the first quarter. Texas State is now 9-12 overall and 4-5 in conference play.

Another problem that the Bobcats have faced all year and in this game was turnovers, coming in this game with a total of 21 turnovers. Also, the Mavericks’ bench outscored the Bobcats by a margin of 45-15.

Although the Mavericks led all game, the Bobcats did outscore UT Arlington 47-44 from the second quarter to the end of the game. Texas State showed some fight by cutting the lead to seven late in the third quarter. The Bobcats went on an 8-0 run, but then the Mavericks extended the lead and had a firm grip on the game from that point on.

Head coach Zenarae Antoine wasn’t very pleased of the first quarter performance as they struggled in the slow start. Despite that flaw, she was proud of the way her team fought a tough battle toward the end regardless of the huge deficit.

Even though the team suffered three back-to-back losses, the young core of players within this team can help resurrect some wins with nine regular season games remaining in the schedule. With today’s loss, the Bobcats drop down to sixth place in the Sun Belt conference while both Appalachian State and Georgia State are tied for fifth, sitting with records of 5-4. The Bobcats are not far behind these two teams and can possibly secure the fifth seed by the end of regular season.

Freshman guard Kennedy Taylor led the team in scoring with 11 points, as well as in minutes played. Junior guard Brooke Holle tied for most rebounds in the game with a total of nine. Senior veteran guard Toshua Leavitt sparked a late shooting streak from three point land, churning out 10 points total.

The Bobcats will look to turn their season around as they travel to North Carolina to take on the Mountaineers. The game will be played on Thursday, Feb. 7 at 11 a.m. Listen to it on KTSW 89.9.
