Earlier this week, the movie US directed by Jordan Peele hit theaters everywhere. After Peele’s box office hit Get Out, movie goers have been clamoring to see what is next from the creative director. I was given the opportunity to represent KTSW at the world premiere of US, which opened SXSW’s 2019 Film Festival. It was a unique experience to be in an intimate setting at the Paramount Theatre in Austin, Texas with the director and cast in the audience.
Audience member and SXSW attendee Gemevieve Martin expressed her thoughts on being part of the World Premiere.
“It’s incredibly exciting to just be here and know that the creator, of what I imagine will be an incredible movie, is here watching it and hearing all of our responses for the first time,” Martin said. “Me not being somebody who would generally watch something from this genre but being so impressed and taken aback by the first film Get Out, I cannot be more excited to see what [Jordan Peele] is going to do.”
US is categorized as a horror film that stars Lupita Nyong’o, Winston Duke, Shahadi Wright Joseph, Evan Alex, Elisabeth Moss and Tim Heideceker. The African-American family goes on what’s supposed to be a relaxing vacation but finds themselves confronted by a family of doppelgangers that has an unseemly connection to them.
At the end of the film, the director and cast had a Q&A in which Peele added: “I have a very clear meaning and commentary I’m trying to strike with this film. I also wanted to design a film that is very personal for every individual. On the broader strokes of things, this movie is about this country. When I decided to write this movie, I was stricken with the fact that we are in a time where we fear the other. Whether it’s the mysterious invader that we think is going to come and kill us or take our jobs, or the faction that we don’t live near that voted a different way than us…”
Peele also stated that he intended for this film to start up conversation amongst viewers and require them to re-watch and find the hidden meanings within the film.
