Night Swimming Mix

Your friend’s above ground pool, your weird uncle’s hot tub, Sewell Park, Barton Springs, Blue Hole, Padre Island, Big Bend hot springs, Frio River, Lake Travis, just fill in the blank with whatever body of water your summer takes you to but picture it in the moonlight, swimming in the dark on another warm, silent Texas summer night.

  1. “Nightswimming” by R.E.M. Slow and melodic with nostalgic lost lover lyrics of past summer nights, it’s a nice place to dive in.
  2. “Night Swim” by Sports off their Naked All the Time album, slows down the pace even more somehow and is nice after a long day when all you want to do is strip down and lay out by the pool.
  3. “Jump in the Pool” by Friendly Fires. Most of these tracks are just as relaxing as a late night skinny dip, but if you’re looking for something a little more upbeat by Friendly Fires, “Jump in the Pool” should do the trick.
  4. “The Swimming Song” by Loudon Wainwright III. Have you ever packed your suit and sunscreen but forget your banjo? Well Loudon Wainwright has got you covered with this classic ’70s track that kicks off his Attempted Mustache album.
  5. “Channel Swimmer” by 10cc. To keep things ‘70s and classy this track off of their third album, The Original Soundtrack, is a great tune to play late at night featuring the lyrics, “I’ll be swimming when you’re all asleep.”
  6. “Nothin’ In The World Can Stop Me Worryin’ ‘Bout That Girl” by the Kinks. Hey wait a quick second, there isn’t anything in the title that implies swimming. That’s right, I’m thinking of Wes Anderson’s movie “Rushmore”. If you’re not familiar just look up “Bill Murray Rushmore Pool Scene” and this will be the score. It’s a lot like the use of Simon & Garfunkel’s music in “The Graduate” where he sinks down to the bottom of the pool.
  7. “Underwater” by Porches. Alright so there’s the easy going poolside moonlight tanning recreation, and the fast pace jumping in and out of the pool doing flips and cannonballs and jackknifes past midnight, but this song is better fitting for those who like to see how deep they can dive before coming up for air.
  8. “Moon River” by Henry Mancini and Johnny Mercer (vocal Audrey Hepburn). This is a nice place to dry off after a night of splishing and splashing. Sure, Frank Sinatra’s done a nice cover, and the other Frank, Frank Ocean, has given it his own spin, but no one can be as charming as Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, sorry boys.

So take a load off, even if you’re juggling summer jobs, classes and other responsibilities like mouths to feed, don’t forget you can always make time for a little late night swim.
