Your winter makeup routine might drastically change from your summer routine. You might have to switch foundation shades or even foundation types. Your skin will probably become dry and chapped lips might be a daily occurrence. That’s why I want to share my five makeup tips you should follow this winter!

1. Moisturize your skin daily.

During the winter, skin might become dry and flaky which means foundation will not go on as smoothly. To avoid this, I suggest using a powerful hydrating mask weekly for at least fifteen minutes. It will help you to figure out how much moisture your skin needs.

Never skip on moisturizers! Apply a moisturizer after you’ve cleansed your face to help lock in the moisture you got when you washed your skin. Make sure the moisturizer has absorbed into your skin before applying makeup.

2. Use a face powder to stop eyeshadow from smudging.

If there’s one thing I hate during winter is how easy my eyes start to water if I’m outside. If I’m walking across campus or even to the bus stop, you can bet my eyes are watering and it might look like I just finished watching the ending of “Titanic.” And it’s all thanks to the harsh winds of winter!

To help keep your eyeshadow locked in and smudge proof, use a face powder before applying.  The powder will help absorb excess oil that causes makeup to smudge.

3. Always carry lip balm.

Just like how skin will become dry during the winter, lips will too. I’ll be honest and admit that I carry lip balm everywhere and everyday! I have one (or several) in my purse, car and backpack.

During the winter, lips lack oil glands and they can begin to flake caused by harsh weather. Dry flaky lips can make lipstick look patchy or blotched. To keep lips smooth and moisturized, exfoliate them to remove dead skin and apply a lip balm for moisture.

4. Use a waterproof mascara to stop runny mascara.

To stop mascara from smearing under your cheeks, I highly recommend switching from a non-waterproof mascara to a waterproof mascara. The waterproof mascara will not only stay on longer but will darken your lashes and hold their curl all day!

Two of my favorite mascaras at the moment are the CoverGirl Super Sizer Mascara which makes my lashes darker and fuller. The Two Face Better Than Sex Mascara has been a holy grail for me ever since I bought it. It lengthens and volumizes my lashes like no other mascara and I highly recommend it if you’re looking for a great mascara.

5. Blush will wake up your complexion.

I’ll admit that I wasn’t an avid blush user before the winter, but now I can’t leave the house without blush. The thing I like about blush is that it can wake up your complexion easily!

If you’re up all night studying for that big test or reading chapter after chapter, not getting enough sleep blush will erase all of that by making it look like you got 10 hours of sleep the night before. Blush helps you look wide awake and fresh no matter what! Apply blush to the apples of your cheeks and blend toward your cheekbones.

These are some of the tips I follow during the winter and I hope they can help you as well. Remember to keep your skin moisturized, and even though it’s not summer, it is still very important to stay hydrated.
