Former Bobcat, Current Giants Linebacker David Mayo Reflects During Quarantine

The recent pandemic is taking a toll on the American economy, including several industries that have become national pastimes. From entertainment to the sporting industry, no one is immune. Recent closures have impacted NCAA championships, Major League Baseball, the NBA and even the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Now, the biggest juggernaut of them all, the NFL, has been forced to adapt as well.

Former Bobcat linebacker David Mayo shared his experience in lockdown quarantine over the past few weeks. The New York Giants star plays in one of the biggest coronavirus hotspots in the country. The NYC Health website has updated the current amount of confirmed cases in New York to more than 130,000.

“[The] Giants are trying to figure this thing out as far as how we’re going to do spring this year since we can’t have workouts or meet in person,” Mayo said.

Many players around the league are showing concerns not only for their own safety, but also for the well-being of their fans. As role models, many athletes believe they have the responsibility to those that support them.

“… It’s just about following the lead of our government and medical officials to get this thing under control. It’s about what anyone can do,” Mayo said. “I’m just trying to do my part in staying safe and being careful around other people.”

With plenty of free time in quarantine amidst the craziness of this pandemic, Mayo reflected on his time in San Marcos at Texas State.

“There’s too many things about Texas State that I loved. The river, the apartment pools. Sand volleyball was my jam. And honestly, I just miss all the teammates that I played with,” Mayo said.

Mayo went on to describe the classic, San Marcos staples that he missed most like Spud Ranch, Loli’s Café, Grins and The Vault.

“We had such a good time together and made so many good memories. Like playing darts or washers in the garage listening to Cody Johnson. Just good times man,” Mayo said.

As per the NFL, they will continue to follow the league’s most important offseason dates: the 2020 Draft being one of the most crucial. The Draft starts on Thursday, Apr. 23 at 7 p.m. and will be broadcasted live from inside the home of NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, who will reveal each team’s selections from his home in Westchester County, New York.
