Texas State defensive back Khambrail Winters killed in San Marcos shooting

Texas State defensive back Khambrail Winters, 20, was killed in a shooting at The Lodge apartments in San Marcos Tuesday night.
Enalisa Briana Blackman and Michael Tyreek Ifeanacho are charged with the capital murder of Winters. Blackman and Ifeanacho are being held in Hays County Jail.
San Marcos police are searching for the identities of other possible suspects or witnesses of the shooting. Winters’ death is an ongoing investigation.
University President Denise Trauth released a statement following the tragic incident.
“Khambrail was a student-athlete in the football program at Texas State and his sudden death will be felt throughout the university community,” Trauth said. “Our deepest sympathies go to Khambrail’s family and loved ones, including his teammates and coaches.”
Texas State head coach Jake Spavital shared the news about Winters and met with his players this morning.
“Our Texas State University football team is deeply saddened by the death of our team member, and friend, Khambrail Winters,” Spavital said. “The coaches and I are meeting with the team to discuss how we will proceed for the rest of the week.”
Brandon Scruggs, a former coach of Winters, described the sophomore as “an extraordinary talent” who was trending towards becoming “one of the best DB’s in the country.” Scruggs spread his message of prayer through Facebook.
“[Kham] was one of the best talents that I had the pleasure of coaching,” Scruggs said. “More importantly he was one of the best young men I had the pleasure of coaching. Please say a prayer for Khambrail and his family.”
Teammate Calvin Hill expressed his grief and condolences on Twitter Wednesday morning.
The shooting took place at 1975 Aquarena Springs Drive around 9:13 Tuesday night.
Winters was found with gunshot wounds in his chest when police arrived. Life-saving efforts performed were unsuccessful. Winters was pronounced dead on the scene.
Winters, a sophomore criminal justice major, was an All-Sun Belt conference honorable mention last season. Winters didn’t play this season due to a torn ACL injury sustained in fall camp before the 2020 season.
