If I had to recommend one place to visit during your stay in San Marcos, it would be for sure The Meadows Center at Spring Lake on Aquarena Springs!
The Meadows Center has been a huge part of Texas State University and the local community of San Marcos since 1994. This educational institute across the football stadium has served the public with water research and features open to the public such as glass bottom boat tours, informational exhibits like an aquarium with local aquatic species, and events like the upcoming Independence Day Family Fun Day.
I had the opportunity to chat with Bess Reisberg about the event and what to look forward to! This will be her second year working at the Meadows Center as Education Manager. “Our monthly Family Fun Day is basically an opportunity for families to get out and have a few activities and crafts to do centered around themes. So, this Tuesday is the July 4th Independence Day Family Fun Day, so we’ll have a few different craft booths that kids can come and make festive crafts.” She also mentioned that a local-shaved ice vendor will be there, and people can buy tickets ($9.75 per adult, $8 for seniors, and $6 for kids under 12) for the glass-bottom boat tours that run every half-hour from 10 am to 5 pm, with the last boat at 4:30 pm. The exhibit inside will also be open for visitors to explore and there will be many places to cool off while doing a fun craft.
There is no strict schedule, Family Fun Day will be going on from 10 am – 3 pm. So, if you want to get on a boat and see the beautiful water conservation with a rich history or cool off with a snow cone and do some crafts, you should definitely check it out. I have personally been on the glass-boat tours twice and been to the exhibit three times. It’s something that truly never gets old and is so much fun for family and friends.
Family Fun Day is completely free to attend. Stick around until sunset or come back later at 9:30 pm to view the fireworks from Bobcat Stadium just across the road, laying on the green grass or from the comfort of your vehicle.
If you are around this Tuesday, I can’t recommend you enough to go to this event. A very low-key and super fun way to celebrate this year’s Independence Day.
