On Sunday, June 25, Lazy Daze cafe in San Marcos hosted its first-ever drag brunch. A drag brunch is a show where the audience can enjoy a typical brunch-style menu while also watching drag queens perform on stage. While the drag show was taking place on the main stage, there were also vendors in the crowd; local San Marcos talent was there selling juices, art and jewelry.

The show’s MCs were two local drag queens, Miz Zgi Zgi and Cedrena Fierce. Both put on a spectacular performance filled with outfit changes, exciting choreography and pop-music classics. Their humor and dances kept the audience captivated and eagerly waiting for what was to come next.

At one point during the show, the two hosts went into the audience to find two people willing to compete in a lip-sync battle, where both contestants had to perform Born This Way by Lady Gaga. The audience was loving these impromptu performances, a definite highlight of the morning.

The drag scene in San Marcos is filled with multiple talented up-and-coming queens, and events like these are more important than ever to support the scene, especially since the abrupt closing of Stonewall Warehouse earlier this year, one of the first gay bars in San Marcos, Texas.

I got a chance to talk with Cedrena Fierce and asked her how the local scene has been since the sudden closing of the iconic nightclub.

“We’re still kinda recovering,” Fierce said, “but I think these opportunities that these local San Marcos businesses are giving such as Lazy Daze, The Porch, Red Room, are starting to open up other businesses to do more with the drag scene in San Marcos. There’s a lot going on now that’s starting to happen, now that they’re realizing that Stonewall is officially gone and we don’t know when it’s coming back”

In our conversation, we also talked about the San Marcos scene in general, and I asked what she hopes the scene will look like as time passes.

“I really hope that we have a lot more people try drag out here,” Fierce said. “Some people think when doing drag you have to start out in Austin but we have a great enough scene here. I hope a lot of upcoming queens feel okay to start here, that’s my ultimate goal.”

In Texas, more and more efforts are coming from the Governor to restrict drag performances, with the most recent effort being the controversial Senate Bill 12 being signed into law. It’s becoming increasingly important to support local drag queens to ensure this art form is protected and can live on.

More drag shows are to come to Lazy Daze on a monthly basis. Fierce and Miz Zgi Zgi will be hosting Christmas in July on July 29 at 7:00 p.m.
