San Marcos City Council place six holder, Shane Scott made a late RSVP for the City Council Debate that was hosted by KTSW San Marcos on Wednesday evening. Scott didn’t inform the KTSW News Staff that he would be attending the debate until earlier that same day and was able to attend the event to answer questions about the issues in San Marcos.

“We didn’t even know Shane Scott was going to be able to make it to the debate,” said KTSW Assistant News Director Matthew Hamill. “He called us today and we just said ‘okay, here’s the questions we’ll be asking.”

Scott plans to continue serving as a council member and is currently running against place 6 candidate, Melissa Derrick, who disagrees with some of the opinions Scott has and some of the decisions that have been approved by the city council.

“I and others have continuously spoken out about serious concerns and developments,” said Derrick. “The irresponsible developments that have been approved over and over again. So I figured if you can’t beat them then join them.”

Scott followed Derrick’s comments by saying that when he first took office there was a stack of project plans that needed to be executed and the council decided that the best thing to do was to ‘get them done’ to which Derrick nodded her head and chuckled. Scott said he acknowledges that all of the projects are commencing at the same time which affects access around the community but he believes it will be for the best.

“We’re in a college town, we’re always gonna be in a college town; if you don’t think that’s the case look around.” said Scott as he stood up to be seen by everybody in the room of the Centro Cultural Hispano de San Marcos. “One of the other reasons I’m really happy in the opportunity of my service is look around again, look at all the infrastructure, roads, sidewalks, the intersections, everything  is being redone. The current council we pushed to have all that happen to the city of San Marcos, now, it happened all at the same time which makes it a little frustrating for everyone to drive around town, that could’ve been organized a little bit better, ok, I’m taking it but I like the growth, I like the access and soon we’re gonna have a very fast, growing, smooth transition between transportation and students and neighborhoods, it just takes a little time to get there.”

Scott spoke highly of the San Marcos community and used the recovery from the Memorial Day floods as an epitome of their resilience. He referred to the San Marcos community as legendary when referring to the response of the community. Scott has been a City Council member since 2010 and has lived in the San Marcos community for 22 years. He plans to stay in the community and continue to better San Marcos for future generations to come.

Fellow City Council Member Lisa Prewitt said she thought the debate went well and all the candidates responded to the questions honestly. She also believed a lot of the important issues were spoken about at the debate but remained neutral as to who she thought was the strongest candidate. She did say that she thinks each candidate responded to the questions the way she thought they would and was impressed with all four candidates.

10 Steps to Recovering from a Break Up

by Daniela Garcia Blog Contributor *KTSW consists of and respects varying opinions within its staff. Opinion articles do not reflect the opinion of KTSW as a whole 1.) Store away the things that remind you of them. The reason why I suggest to store instead of throw or burn or break, is because you never know how you will feel towards this person in a year, or maybe a couple […]
