This Friday, San Marcos will be suiting up to take on Boerne-Champion in Boerne for their 7th district game. Boerne currently sits in the second spot in district, one game behind Tivy, who holds Boerne-Champion’s only district loss. San Marcos, on the other hand, is currently tied with Alamo Heights for the 4th spot at 4-2 on the season. These next two games will be key for the Rattlers to slide into that final playoff spot.

This next game will not be an easy win like it was against San Antonio Kennedy. Champion has a high powered offense led by their stud quarterback, Josh Green. Green is second in district in passing yards only behind the leader, Cade Dyal, by 14 yards. Green is also 4th in rushing yards with 654 yards total. San Marcos head coach, Mark Soto, touched on what makes Josh Green such a difficult quarterback to stop on the Wednesday episode of Bobcat Radio: “The quarterback is a big kid. He runs the ball well, and throws the ball well. He likes to scramble quite a bit, and they can spread the ball around. They have some great receivers with some great hands.”

Coach Soto was correct in saying that the receivers for Boerne-Champion are deadly. Chayce Bolli and Hayden Mcmurrey are the top two receivers in the district. The two wide-outs have over 700 yards receiving, and 1,482 receiving yards combined. This is going to be a tough matchup for the Rattlers secondary who have shown some weakness against strong receivers. Zedric Horton, the senior cornerback, is their best cover corner with excellent recovery speed. He will probably be matched up against Bolli. This is a matchup that needs to be paid a lot of attention.

On the other side a receiver for San Marcos has been making a name for himself. Kaleb Johnson, or “KJ Big Play”, has come alive here in the late half of the season, easily becoming Carl Ahrens favorite target, and for good reason. Against Kennedy Kaleb Johnson had only 3 catches, but they were good for 130 yards and two touchdowns. two weeks ago in their matchup against Tivy, he had 9 receptions for 81 yards. Boerne-Champion has a solid secondary. Colton Mathews well probably be on the other side of the ball nose to nose on KJ. Coach Soto was thrilled to talk about Johnson’s recent success saying, “He came to us late, he came to us his junior year. He hasn’t played in a while but he his always working hard. We tell our seniors to be playing the best ball of their career’s, and Kaleb seems to be doing that.”

Cavion Garner has been shouldering the load for San Marcos since Hamilton went down. Garner broke the 1,000 yard mark in the last game against Kennedy, and extended his touchdown total to 13. Garner is clearly the best running back in the district, and teams are starting to pick up on that. Garner struggled 2 weeks ago facing the stout Tivy defense. Tivy dialed in on Garner, loading the box as much as possible, and sending as many guys after him as they could. This week Boerne-Champion will look to do the same thing. The defensive attack will be led by senior linebacker Trey Moskal, who is the leading tackler and also leads the team in sacks with 4. Look for Moskal to be causing mayhem for the San Marcos offense.

The game against Boerne-Champion will be broadcast on KTSW-FM 89.9 and online at starting at 7:20 this Friday.

Philosophical Thoughts on the State of Our Democracy

By Jimmy Preston KTSW Web Content Contributor *KTSW consists of and respects varying opinions within its staff. Opinion articles do not reflect the opinion of KTSW as a whole. The upcoming election, with seven proposed constitutional amendments, has me worrying about the state of our Democracy. With a little more than six percent showing up for the 2013 election, and less than 4 for the 2011 election, constitutional amendment elections […]
