SAN MARCOS— For homecoming weekend with an attendance of 15,241 at Bobcat Stadium, Texas State played with diligence in Saturday’s match-up against New Mexico State, but the Bobcats were unable to win the battle against the Sun Belt Conference’s leading rusher Larry Rose III. The running back that caught all the attention for New Mexico State, Rose rushed 207 yards and received 87 yards against the Bobcats defense. The Bobcats had three offensive turnovers that helped pave the way for NMS to win 31-21 (NMS 2-7, TXST 2-6).

After New Mexico State’s first win last week 55-38 in overtime over Idaho, Texas State Quarterback Tyler Jones mentioned that the team was aware that the Aggies had some momentum and some highs going into the game against the Bobcats.

“They’re a good team,” said Jones. “I just think they had some better blitzes and stuff at different times than what we expected. It’s understandable, we’re going to have our highs and lows, but they didn’t do anything particular that we just weren’t ready for.”

Jones stood out leading the team in his seventh rushing touchdown this season, the most of his career, and the junior QB finished the night with 287 passing yards.

Damani Alexcee led the team defensively with 12 tackles over the Aggies.

The Bobcats have been struggling with finding the right balance on the field to have another shot at being bowl eligible this season. Alexcee said this is the point in the season that the team has to come together.

“At that at the end of the day, we’re still a team,” said Alexcee. “Everybody that was here together in the beginning of August is still here right now.”

“We just have to look at ourselves in the mirror and ask ourselves, do we really want to finish this season right as a band of brothers?” said Alexcee.

Half-way through the season, Head Coach Dennis Franchione is still determined to make sure his team finds the answer to win in dire situations to pull out with a victory especially on home turf.

“Our team just can’t seem to find a way right now and that’s on me,” Coach Franchione said. “I accept full responsibility for that. We’ve got to find a way for them to find a way. As coaches and myself, we’re struggling doing that right now.”

Positive Texas State Highlights:

Lumi Kaba had a career night making a 66-yard punt and a 59-yarder in the second quarter.

Ryan Carden caught a 48-yard pass for the longest gain of his career.

Robert Lowe had 88 rushing yards.

C.J. Best had 74 receiving yards on six completions.

NEXT GAME: Texas State will be home against Georgia State at 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 14. Last season the Bobcats won the match-up over the Panthers 54-31 in Georgia. To listen to the game tune into KTSW-FM 89.9 to hear Texas State broadcasters Brant Freeman and Bill Cullhane.

WHERE DO THE BOBCATS STAND: There are two more home games at Bobcat Stadium (11/14 & 11/19), then Texas State plays two on the road. If the Bobcats want to reach bowl eligibility the team has to win every game moving forward. Texas State is 1-3 in the Sun Belt Conference and 2-6 overall.
