After seven years of not making the playoffs, Coach Mark Soto finally has the San Marcos Rattlers back. After taking over four years ago, and narrowly missing the playoffs the past two years, the Rattlers finally got over the hump and beat Lockhart to play in the postseason. The Rattlers finished at 7-3 will take on the Harlandale Indians that finished at 6-4, but is the higher seed. The Rattlers and Indians square off Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Home Sweet Home

The newly adopted UIL rule for the 6A playoffs this year, giving the higher seed the option to host its bi-district game (opening round) at home or at a neutral site, has teams like Arlington Bowie, Midland, and Copperas Cove traveling up to five hours.

Starting Fresh

Last year, Scarborough became the first winless team to make the UIL playoffs. The Spartans are back after going 1-9 ending their 59-game losing streak. With so many teams able to get in means a higher chance of teams with losing records getting in. 6A has 13 teams, and 5A has six teams with losing records get in.

Friday Night Lights

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the famed 1988 Odessa Permian Panthers team that reached the state semifinals. Mojo is 9-1 and probably won’t face a great team until the third round, which likely means the Panthers will make a deep playoff run.

Headlining Games

Back to back 6A DII champion Cedar Hill (9-1) take on eight-time state champion Southlake Carroll (8-2) Friday at 7:30 p.m. on the road in the Dragons home stadium in Southlake.

A battle between two of the Houston areas top schools could lead to a lot of points being scored between Atascocita’s (9-1) high octane offense and Klein Collins’ tremendous run game (9-1) 7 p.m. at Klein Memorial.

Lufkin is looking for revenge Friday night. Longview knocked Lufkin out of the playoffs last year and won the season opener this year, the combined point differential is two points. Longview beat 43-42 in the playoffs and blocked an extra point this year to win 21-20. The game is Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Rose Stadium.
