Texas State men’s basketball came away with a big 78-57 win last night over the Troy Trojans. Along with the victory, Coach Danny Kaspar reached a career milestone with his 500th win.
The Bobcats improve to a 13-15 overall record and were led by Kavin Gilder-Tilbury’s career high 26 points on 9-of-12 shooting including 6 three-pointers. Ethan Montalvo and Cameron Naylor both had double digit scoring and Ojai Black contributed as well by dishing out a career high 12 assists; one assist short of tying the school record currently held by Stacy Bennett. Emani Gant, who averages almost 20 points per game, was held to only eight points but tallied eight rebounds and four assists.
The Cats also tied a season-high with its 55.6 shooting percentage on 30-of-54 shooting from the floor and a team total 20 assists including 9-for-14 from the three point line. On the defensive end, the Bobcats held the Trojans to only 39.2 percent shooting from the field.
The Trojans kept the game interesting through the first half but once the second half began, the Bobcats took over. Up ten points and less than three minutes into the second half, the Bobcats went on an 11-2 run. The run ended any hope that the Trojans had on making a comeback.
With the win, the Bobcats are tied for the eighth seed in the Sun-Belt Conference with the Arkansas State Red Wolves. Texas State only has one remaining game left in the regular season and hold a tiebreaker over Arkansas State. The Cats will take on the South Alabama Jaguars in their final must-win home game tomorrow at Strahan Coliseum. A game in which Cameron Naylor, Ethan Montalvo and Emani Gant will all be honored for senior night. Tipoff is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
