The Texas State Women’s golf team took first place in the Sun Belt Tournament Conference Championship on Tuesday in Miramar, Florida. Coach Mike Akers was in the KTSW studio on Bobcat Radio to talk about their first ever conference championship.
“We had three good rounds, and came out on top by 19 shots,” Coach Akers said on his team’s play in the tournament. “It really feels good.”
Texas States very own Maty Monzingo won the individual honor over Little Rock’s Shania Berger with tournament rounds 74, 73, and 74, and then birdied in the second playoff hole to win over Berger.
“Maty knew exactly what to do on 17 and 18, because she just played them,” Coach Akers said.
“This year we flat out talked more about winning,” Coach Akers saib about the message to his team this year. “We talked about ordering rings, and we talked about going to regionals. And I don’t think there is anything wrong with that.”
Texas State won over second place Troy by 19 shots. Texas State earns the victory after back-to-back second place outcomes in the 2014 and 2015 Sun Belt Conference Tournaments.
