Prom king. Star quarterback. Major League Baseball player. This list of accolades from David Hamilton continues to grow and grow. For as good as he was on the football field, the San Marcos senior was that much better on the diamond.
In the 28th round of the 2016 MLB Draft, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim selected San Marcos’ very own David Hamilton. This season, Hamilton lead the Rattlers to a regional quarterfinal appearance after returning from a collarbone injury suffered during the football season.
Hamilton now faces a potentially tough decision. He committed to playing for the University of Texas a year ago but things have changed. Augie Garrido, the long-time coach for Longhorn baseball, has stepped down and a successor has yet to be named. Hamilton has stated that he still intends to attend UT. Still, the decision remains.
On one hand, Hamilton can follow in his father’s footsteps and join the ranks of the very few who ever get a chance to play at baseball’s highest level. On the other, Hamilton could attend a university with a storied baseball program that desperately needs a player of his caliber as they try and return to prominence.
Whatever he chooses, one thing is clear: David Hamilton will continue to dazzle on the diamond.
