The Texas State Bobcats are coming into this game after a disappointing loss against Georgia State 41-21 after not being able to come back from 34 unanswered points by the Panthers. The Bobcats now sit at 2-3 on the season and are 0-1 in Sun Belt Conference play.
The University of Louisiana-Monroe are coming off a devastating loss themselves to the Idaho Vandals. A late game-winning field goal sealed the deal for the Vandals as time expired giving them the win by a score of 34-31. The Warhawks are now 1-4 on the season after losing four straight games after a week one win.
UL-Monroe has a defense that ranks second to last in the Sun Belt Conference giving up over 500 yards a game. Look forward to the Bobcats sticking with what they know best: spreading defenses out and using their passing attack to move the ball down the field.
Texas State holds the second ranked passing offense in the Sun Belt conference led by quarterback Tyler Jones who is averaging 275 yards a game through the air. Jones will be looking to distribute the ball to his top play makers at receiver, Elijah King and a freshman breakout player Thurman Morbley. King and Morbley have combined for 36 catches, 538 yards and 3 touchdowns on the year.
The Bobcats will continue to attempt to get the running game going after a slow start to the season. Running back Stedman Mayberry got back on track last week posting a season-high 87 yards on the ground and 148 yards all-purpose. Be on the lookout for him to continue to get even more involved in the ground game today.
The UL-Monroe Warhawks play with more of a balanced attack and average 240 yards a game through the air and 160 yards on the ground. The number one player the Bobcats will need to key in on for the game will be quarterback Garrett Smith. Smith is a shifty dual-threat quarterback and is the Warhawks leading passer and rusher on the season with 12 total touchdown thus far.
This is the second Sun Belt Conference match-up for both teams, and both teams aren’t looking forward to being 0-2 on the season in conference play. This game will be an exciting shootout between two high flying offenses in the state of Louisiana.
Kickoff is set for 6:00 p.m. at Malone Stadium in Monroe, LA and will be televised on ESPN3.
