I know everyone is familiar with the “new year, new me” statement. Well Texas State women’s basketball started the new year fresh as they triumphed in their first win in conference play over the Georgia Southern Eagles. The Bobcats won 64-52 on the road in Statesboro, Georgia. This win definitely sets the tone for the impending games around the corner.

Bobcat head coach Zenarae Antoine was adamant about anyone opposing her statements from Dec. 31, 2018. She told Texas State’s own play-by-play broadcaster Clint Shields of the team’s preparation for conference play. Although it’s not easy for most teams to come hot out the gate, Antoine made that simulation a true deed.

It all started with senior veteran Toshua Leavitt’s continuous leadership in order to kick start 2019 on a good note. The Nixa, Missouri native tallied 21 points on 7-of-14 from the field. She was able to pump up the score volume early in the game. Senior forward Zandra Emanuel recorded a career-high 14 rebounds with an extra 12 points as sauce on the side. She was the key contributor in increasing the lead over the Eagles in the last few minutes of the fourth quarter. By the way– you definitely can not miss junior guard Brooke Holle’s performance, another double digit contender with 11 points and five offensive rebounds to top it off.

With today’s performance it’s safe to say the Bobcats are looking for revenge all spring ‘19. The bobcats now improve to 6-0 in league openers since joining the Sun Belt conference. Wins like this make me even more interested in seeing what the bobcats have to offer in the near future. After several bench players getting their feet wet against Texas A&M International on New Year’s Eve, the team is now locked and loaded for any opponent at this point.

The 6-7 bobcats will continue to stay in Georgia as they face the Georgia State Panthers this Saturday afternoon in Atlanta. Tune in to KTSW 89.9 for the pregame show starting at 12:45 pm!

Texas State Closes Out 2018 by Dusting the Dust Devils

By Reily Chestnut Sports Director 2018 saw plenty of highs and lows for Texas State women’s basketball, but it looks like the Bobcats managed to end the year with a 89-25 win over the D-II Texas A&M International. This win helps us transition from the holly jolly ride of non-conference play into Sun Belt action next year. Victory was expected to be in the Bobcats' grasp much like their male […]
