It was a beautiful day for softball in San Marcos as the Texas State Bobcats matched up against another in-state opponent, Lamar. Texas State Bobcats came into this game with all the momentum in the world having won the last five games, looking to continue their impressive streak against a formidable Lamar Cardinals team. Both teams started the game strong but only one came out victorious as the Texas State Bobcats beat the Lamar Cardinals with a final score of 4-1.
Texas State defense came to play behind another incredible performance from the sophomore pitcher, Meagan King, who allowed only 4 hits the entire game. With this kind of pitching, the Bobcats had every opportunity on offense to confidently score against the Cardinals. Junior outfielder, Christiana McDowell, would score the first run of the night in the bottom of the first inning behind a single to center field strike by sophomore infielder, Tara Oltmann.
The Lamar Cardinals quickly answered back in the top of the second inning as senior first baseman, Taylor Davis, singled to right center allowing junior infielder, Jade Lewis, to score a run. The Cardinal’s offense would stall after this inning as they could not get back in rhythm for the rest of the game.
Both teams’ offense started to struggle throughout the third and fourth inning as both combined for zero runs, two hits, and zero errors. With the game tied, both teams entered the fifth inning looking to gain the upper-hand. The Bobcats’ defense continued to dominate the Cardinals in the last three innings only allowing a single hit as the Bobcats searched for their offensive surge in the bottom of the fifth inning.
The Texas State Bobcats found their offensive momentum in the bottom of the fifth as freshman catcher, Cat Crenek, would score a run to put the Bobcats up 2-1. With the lead and sophomore pitcher, Meagan King, still playing lights out, the Bobcats looked to put this game away quickly as they headed into the bottom of the sixth inning. Senior outfielder, Mari Cranek, came to bat with the bases loaded and singled to left field to allow senior outfielder, Kennedy Cline, to score a run. Following soon afterward, junior outfielder, Christiana McDowell, came to bat with the bases loaded once again as she singled to left field to allow sophomore infielder, ArieAnn Bell, to score a run and ultimately put the dagger in the Lamar Cardinals to win the game with a final score of 4-1.
The Texas State Bobcats increase their overall record to 16-15 after their win. Be sure to catch the Bobcats this weekend against a conference opponent, Georgia State, with the first matchup this Friday, March 29 at 6 p.m. here at Bobcat Softball Stadium in San Marcos.
