Texas State Athletics announced Steven Trout as the new head baseball coach for the Bobcats on Monday.

Trout served as the associate head coach and recruiting coordinator for Texas State baseball since the 2018 season. This is Trout’s second stint under the Bobcat coaching umbrella after returning to the staff as hitting coach in 2016.

Trout looks to instill the culture former coach Ty Harrington produced during his 20-year coaching run.

“One thing I did learn from Coach Harrington was how to run a baseball team with class,” Trout said. “As he likes to say, ‘how to do it right.’”

In the words of Larry Teis, Texas State University Director of Athletics, coach Trout has “big shoes to fill” in the void of coach Harrington’s retirement. However, Trout is ready for the challenge and is aware of the new standard for Texas State baseball.

“This last 2019 championship was unreal,” Trout said. “But it’s no longer a goal for our program, it’s now an expectation.”

Ty Harrington, former Texas State head coach, believes Bobcat baseball is in good hands following Monday’s announcement. Harrington’s expectations for coach Trout remain high in the midst of a new era for Texas State.

“Steven is one of the most talented, knowledgeable, committed, creative and loyal persons and coach that is involved with college baseball,” Harrington said. “He will be a superstar in this business as a head coach.”

Jake Arrieta, Philadelphia Phillies starting pitcher and MLB Cy Young winner, is a longtime friend and former roommate of Trout back at West Virginia University. Arrieta attributes Trout’s success to his determination and will to succeed.

“Steven was that teammate that you knew was going to show up every day and give you everything he had in a practice or a game,” Arrieta said. “He gives everything to what he’s doing and that carries over to his players.”

Trout becomes the fifth head coach for the Bobcats in the Division I era.
