The Rattlers Travel to San Antonio for Saturday Night Football

The San Marcos Rattlers traveled to San Antonio on Sept. 7 to take on the Johnson Jaguars at Jerry Comalander Stadium.  The Jaguars emerged victorious 49-14 after four quarters of quality football.

The final score wasn’t entirely indicative of a game that was out of hand.  In fact, San Marcos scored first on a 55-yard throw from senior quarterback Alex Garcia to senior wide receiver Diego Cruz down the right sideline.

On Johnson’s next drive, San Marcos forced three straight stops forcing a punting formation out of Johnson.  However, the Jaguar’s quarterback Ty Reasoner took a direct snap out of the backfield from the long-snapper, got around the Rattler defense and took it to the house.

Johnson was able to score two more times before the half ended with excellent throws by Reasoner.  Reasoner was difficult to cover in the pass game, but also used his legs to move the chains and gain big yardage against the Rattlers.

The Rattlers didn’t let a 21-7 deficit at halftime phase their mindset though. The defense came out aggressive and made key plays that forced the Jaguar offense off the field.  Then, the offense made them pay.

Another big throw down the field by Garcia was completed to Cruz who took the Rattlers deep into Jaguar territory to their five yard line.  Sophomore running back Benito Canales was able to run the ball in the endzone on the ensuing play, bringing the score to 21-14.

Johnson took the keys to the car the rest of the game with 28 unanswered points in the last 18 minutes of regulation, mostly because there was no answer on defense to Reasoner’s running ability.  On the other side, San Marcos’ offense lulled to a stop the next couple drives.

San Marcos will play their first home game of the season against Laredo United (1-1) on Friday, Sept.13.  Rattler fans will remember the high scoring, close game last season against the Longhorns. That game saw United take a huge 28-7 lead in the first quarter while San Marcos stormed back to win 50-49.

You can listen to the game on KTSW 89.9 with pregame coverage beginning at 7:15 p.m.
