The San Marcos Rattlers (0-4) fall to the East Central Hornets (3-1) 42-38 in overtime under the lights at Rattler Stadium on Sept. 20.
It did not take long for the Rattlers to put points up on the board as Alex Garcia rolls out of the pocket to the left and throws a 75-yard bomb to star senior wide receiver Diego Cruz just 22 seconds into the contest.
The Rattler offense didn’t stop there as their next two drives would also result in two more rushing touchdowns from Benito Canales on a one-yard run, and Garcia on a three-yard run. Defensively, the Rattlers did not make it easy for the Hornets as they were able to get a touchdown in the first with a 54-yard rushing touchdown from senior running back Deangelo Rosemond.
The Rattlers held a 21-7 lead.
San Marcos came out with another bomb as Garcia connects with Takai Madgett for a 38-yard touchdown to give the Rattlers a commanding 28-7 lead early in the second. The Hornets finally came out of their offensive slump and were able to run the ball handily with Rosemond as he finds the end-zone twice on the Hornets next few offensive drives to cut the deficit to 28-21.
Garcia threw an interception late in the second quarter to give the Hornets good field position on the Rattlers 34-yard line. The Hornets were able to tie the game with just two seconds left in the half with a 20-yard QB scramble from Caden Bosanko.
The Hornets began the second half with the ball but were not able to really move the ball as the Rattler defense started to adjust to the high-power run offense. On the other hand, the Hornets were able to pick off Garcia for the second time of the night. The score stayed knotted up at 28 as no one tallied any points in the third quarter.
In the first minute of the fourth quarter, Rosemond rushed it up the middle three yards to find the end-zone for the fourth time of the night to give East Central a 35-28 lead.
The Rattlers established a pivotal offensive drive throughout the fourth quarter as they drove the ball down the field with big receptions from Cruz and Madgett. Canales had a few good runs to move the ball close to the goal-line as Garcia keeps the ball to himself and pounds it three yards into the end-zone to tie the game at 35.
East Central had a chance to win the game in regulation with a 26-yard field goal attempt with only five seconds left in the game, but Hornets kicker Noah Chavez kicks the ball off the left upright sending the game into overtime.
San Marcos started overtime with the ball first and were not able to convert on a third down so they had to settle for a long field goal made by Daniel Marquez, giving the Rattlers an early 38-35 over time lead over East Central.
The Rattlers were not able to keep Rosemond out of the end-zone as he tallied his fifth rushing touchdown of the night, sealing the victory for the Hornets.
San Marcos will be traveling to Converse, Texas, to square off with Judson High School next Friday, Sept. 27.
