SAN MARCOS, Texas – On Thursday, Texas State Softball opened the Texas State Classic with their doubleheader against The University of Texas San Antonio and The University of Texas Arlington at the Bobcat Softball Stadium.

Bobcats pitcher Tori McCann completed a full game recording seven K’s and holding the Roadrunners scoreless through all seven innings of play as the Bobcats kept UTSA off the scoreboard 1-0. Left fielder Ciara Trahan hit a walk-off RBI single in a comeback victory over the UTA Mavericks in extra innings for the second win of the day.

The wins improve the Bobcat’s overall record to 8-4 and 2-0 in The Texas State Classic. Texas State Coach Ricci Woodard said the team’s success for the day came from “competing.”

“The thing that I like is that we competed for every pitch for 14 innings,” said Woodard. “That has been the big thing we’ve talked about, there are some things we could have done better, but we competed.”

The Bobcats’ one run the entire game against UTSA came in the bottom of the first inning. Woodard said the team felt “comfortable” with their lead throughout all seven innings.

“I feel like we kept the moment of that game the entire time,” said Woodard. “It never felt like one run wasn’t gonna be enough, and that’s how you know your pitcher is dealing.”

Pitcher Jessica Mullins said, “We still got it,” explaining that the success the pitching staff feels isn’t built up from the past few days but from this season and the previous season.

“We’re just stronger than ever,” said Mullins. “This is the strongest pitching staff I’ve ever been a part of.”

The Bobcats used their momentum going into their second matchup of the day as they notch their first win coming from behind this season against conference rival UTA. Woodard told her team, “It’s one pitch at a time.”

“We haven’t come from behind and won any games this year,” said Woodard. “You play seven innings for a reason that’s been the whole approach this week. So, let’s play seven innings, pitch one pitch at a time and see what happens.”

Bobcats left fielder Trahan knocked in an RBI single in extra innings to secure the Bobcat win against the Mavericks. Trahan said the wins are “big” for the Bobcats and will provide the spark the team has wanted.

“To come out here and get two wins against two good teams,” said Trahan. “It’s really big for us.”

The pair of wins bring the Bobcat’s winning streak to two. The Bobcats look to use the momentum in their next game in the Texas State Classic Friday at 4 p.m. against Kansas University at The Bobcat Softball Stadium, where you can listen on KTSW 89.9!
