The Bobcat’s (2-8) woes continue with their most recent loss to the SMU Mustangs (7-1), extending their losing streak to eight.
The Mustangs came out in the first period on the attack. Forward Nikita Kovalev scored the match’s first goal, his 14th on the season, giving the Mustangs an early lead in the first five minutes of the first period.
The Bobcats succeeded in the second period by applying constant pressure to the Mustang defense after giving up their first goal of the night and answering back with a score of their own, thanks to senior forward Jake Robinson, who found the back of the goal in the second period.
Texas State would have little time to enjoy their success as the Mustangs would answer back with a goal from forward Michael Thompson giving them a 2-1 lead right before the end of the second period.
The match continued to swing back and forth as the Bobcats capitalized on a power play opportunity with a score from freshman forward Brandon Walton in the first two minutes of the third period.
The Bobcats could not keep up with the Mustang attack, as they only had 24 shots on goal on the night compared to the Mustangs’ 42.
The Mustangs would capitalize off their opportunities after a collapse on the defensive end and ice the game in the final second with a late score from freshman forward Lars Osterberg giving him one assist and one goal extending their lead over the Bobcats 4-2 ending the game.
The Bobcats look to snap their losing streak in their next matchup against the East Texas Baptist Tigers, who they played earlier this year, being swept on the road in their two-game series.
The Bobcats take on the Tigers at the Crossover in Cedar Park on Nov. 3 at 8:15 p.m.
