The highly anticipated “Dig Pink” match between the Texas State University women’s volleyball team and South Alabama on Oct. 21, 2023, had spectators on the edge of their seats. This special event, played on Texas State’s home court, was not only an exhilarating showcase of fierce competition but also a heartwarming reunion for alumni from the 2003 and 2013 teams.
Both teams immediately displayed their tenacity and dedication to winning. Every point was hotly contested, and the teams appeared evenly matched. The players from Texas State exhibited excellent coordination and teamwork, creating an electric atmosphere for the match.
The “Dig Pink” theme added a meaningful layer to the match, highlighting the team’s support for breast cancer awareness and research. Pink ribbons, attire and decorations filled the venue, reminding everyone of the greater cause they were playing for. The event aimed to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer while honoring survivors and those affected by this disease.
The opening set of the match set the tone for the rest of the game as neither team managed to gain the upper hand. The first set featured incredible digs, powerful spikes, and accurate serves, treating the audience to breathtaking rallies. Ultimately, South Alabama clinched the opening set with a score of 25–22.
As the match progressed to the second set, Texas State mounted a determined comeback, winning it 25–14 due to their robust defensive play and potent offensive maneuvers. This tied the match at one set apiece.
In the third set, Texas State’s home team showed their tenacity by taking it 25–22, regaining their rhythm and delivering outstanding plays. With a 2-1 lead, the Texas State Bobcats were eager to secure the win.
The fourth set was a nail-biter that had everyone holding their breath. Texas State won 25–20, thanks to their incredible perseverance, self-control, and teamwork. With a thrilling 3-1 victory, the Bobcats sealed the match, sending the crowd into a frenzy.
This “Dig Pink” match against South Alabama will undoubtedly be remembered as one of the most exciting of the season for the Texas State women’s volleyball team. It showcased their resilience, teamwork, and ability to perform under pressure, all while supporting an important cause. The victory was a testament to their hard work and dedication, leaving fans eagerly anticipating their next matchup.
The match highlighted outstanding performances from several key players who delivered exceptional stats, solidifying their pivotal roles in the team’s success. Leading the charge in kills were KJ Johnson and Maggie Walsh, both contributing 12 kills each, while Samantha Wunsch added 10 crucial kills to the team’s tally. Bailey Hanner’s serving game saw her deliver an ace, providing the team with a critical advantage. The defensive line was impressively anchored by Jade Defraeye, Samantha Wunsch, and Bailey Hanner, who combined for an impressive 21 blocks. Ryann Torres commanded the court with an exceptional 38 assists, with KJ Johnson and Alyssa Ortega providing valuable assistance with 4 and 2 assists, respectively. On the defensive front, Alyssa Ortega played a pivotal role with 22 digs, closely followed by KJ Johnson with 21 and Ryann Torres with 11, collectively ensuring that the team maintained an unwavering stance against their opponents.
The presence of alumni from the 2003 and 2013 teams added a special touch to the “Dig Pink” event. These former players, who had once donned the same Texas State jersey and contributed to the team’s rich legacy, were there to support and cheer on the current squad. It was a moment of nostalgia and camaraderie, reminding everyone of the enduring spirit of Texas State women’s volleyball.
