San Marcos, Texas– Thursday night the Texas State Bobcats faced off against the Troy Trojans in a Sun Belt conference showdown.
The Bobcats came into this game following a 10-point loss to the ULM Warhawks on Jan. 13. The Bobcats tried to use their home court advantage as they had been on the road for the previous four games.
You can tell from the warm-ups before the game had even started that the Bobcats were excited to be back home and to have their fans behind their back. To start of the opening tip the Bobcats came out swinging by going on a 9-0 run to start the game but soon collapsed under the Trojans defense to give up their early lead to go into halftime being down 47-53.
With the bulk of the Bobcat’s turnovers coming from the Trojans full court press, head coach Zenarae Antoine mentioned how the girls know what to do and how to prepare for future games.
“Oh, they know what to do by watching film,” Antoine said. “There’s only so much you can do…Your focus really needs to be on when understanding those angles and doing better”.
Both teams played an equally physical game, but the Trojans ended the night with 34 free throw attempts to the Bobcats 18. However, this didn’t discourage the Bobcats as they kept fighting in the game to try to get the lead in the second half. Even being down double digits during the entire third quarter they still had the grit and grind mindset heading into the fourth quarter.
The Bobcats were struggling to find an offensive rhythm to start the fourth quarter but midway during the fourth quarter is when the Bobcats started clicking. With Ja’niah Henson carrying the scoring load, her teammates followed her by driving into the paint and making timely three pointers. The Bobcats cut the lead to four with three minutes to go in the game, erasing that double digit deficit they were once in. Unfortunately, the Bobcats could not finish on top as the Trojans came out with the victory in their home arena.
The Bobcats will host the Arkansas State Red Wolves at Strahan Arena this Saturday afternoon at 2:00pm.
