Arkansas State dominates, securing victory against Texas State Bobcats

SAN MARCOS – The Red wolves’ take the victory over The Bobcats 79-72.  

The Bobcats came into this game following a 13-point win against Louisiana-Monroe.  Feb. 9, 2023, was the last time the Bobcats faced the Red Wolves. The Bobcats came out with a victorious win of 66-62. In the 21-22 season the red wolves beat the Bobcats by 7 points.  

Tonight, the Red Wolves held the Bobcats to scoring 36 points in the first half. Jordan Mason started the game hot with two back-to-back jumpers for the Bobcats.  Mason ended the night with 21 points, and eight points at the end of the first. With 9:48 seconds left in the first Mason broke away on a fast break with a one-handed dunk. Overall, the Bobcats shot 13 for 26 in the first half, and the Wolves shot 15 for 34. The Red Wolf’s lockdown defense is what kept them alive this half.  

Going into halftime the Red Wolves led the Bobcats by 7 points. After Kaden Gumbs broke down a defender, the Red Wolves went on a 9-0 scoring run to force a Texas State timeout. The Bobcats trail by nine in the second half. The Bobcats tied the game at 62-62 with an 8-1 run over the last 1:36. Mason accounted for four of the six points scored from the free throw line. Neither team was able to make a shot for the next 90 seconds until Freddy Hicks made a three-point play, putting the visitors ahead for good. With just 12 seconds left in the game, Dylan Dawson hit a clutch three-pointer, bringing the score to 76-72. Avery Felts was fouled with ten seconds left and both free throws were good. Also, Dominguez for the Red Wolves was able to get the ball on a fast break and close out the game.   

The next Sunbelt conference matchup for the Bobcats will be against the Troy Trojans on Wednesday, Jan. 24 at 6pm.
