San Marcos Basketball Struggles at New Braunfels

NEW BRAUNFELS – San Marcos Rattlers, boys’ basketball, come up short to New Braunfels on the road, dropping the district game 75-68.  

The Rattlers fall to 20-9 on the season and 1-3 in district play, while the Unicorns continue their winning streak, improving to 24-8 on the year and 4-0 in district 27-6A. 

The Rattlers came into the matchup needing a win after being unable to close the gap in their loss to the Judson Rockets last Friday, 68-64. The theme would carry over as the Rattlers would have to travel down the road and face a hot Unicorn squad that had won nine of their last ten games.

The Rattlers started out rough for the first quarter, being outscored 25-21 due to New Braunfels endless effort to crash the rim for second-chance points. The dominance on the boards would continue through four quarters as the Rattlers were outrebounded 34-24.  

The second quarter saw Rattler’s guards Cash Good and Donavan Riddick answer back, creating shots and second opportunities. Good led the Rattlers in scoring with 19, and Riddick led the way with eight boards. The guards combined for 35 total points on the night.

Unicorn guard Lance Beeghley came off the bench and led the Unicorns in scoring with 27 points. While Unicorns guard Jaydon James led New Braunfels with eight rebounds.

The Rattlers looked to get to half down by one, but Unicorn guard Jaxon Huff added to the New Braunfels lead with a three-pointer at the buzzer, extending the New Braunfels lead by three and putting the Rattlers in a 42-38 deficit at the half.

The Unicorns would continue their attack, extending their lead to six with three minutes into the second half until a Rattlers run cut into the lead, bringing them within one thanks to Rattlers guard Zyair Jolivette connecting on a three.

Midway through the third quarter, San Marcos had the Unicorn offense in limbo, holding them to their lowest-scoring quarter of the night at 14 points.

With the fourth quarter seeing both teams trading shots, eventually the New Braunfels offense was able to pick back up and make several crucial stops down the stretch, leading the way to Unicron’s victory at home.

The Rattlers look to stop the bleeding as they find themselves on a two-game losing streak against East Central, who is also coming off a tough loss against Samuel Clemens, 77-42.
