SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas State Bobcats (5-1) closed out the first tournament of the season with a 3-1 win over the Southern Illinois Salukis (3-2) Sunday morning.
The Bobcats suffered their first loss of the 2024 season to the Salukis 6-1 Saturday night after errors plagued the Bobcats. Putting the past behind them, the Bobcats began fresh on Sunday morning, with senior pitcher Jessica Mullins starting in the circle for five scoreless innings with eight strikeouts.
“We just had to review ourselves, review our mistakes, and check our mentality to be able to bounce back after a good night’s rest,” pitcher Jessica Mullins said. “We just had to be ourselves, and we could do it.”

Sophomore utility Katarine Zarate lit up the batter’s box with a double down the left line in the second inning to drive in two runs, Sydney Harvey and Anna Jones, after they earned a free base. Following three stale innings with no action from either side of the plate, junior outfielder Ciara Trahan sparked a fire in the Bobcats with a single to get on base. In the bottom of the sixth inning, senior utility Anna Jones drove one along the third base line to bring Trahan home on an RBI double.
After a close 3-1 win at Bobcat Softball Stadium, the Bobcats came back for more and walked off the Creighton Bluejays later that afternoon. Texas State now sits at 5-1 with their second tournament of the 2024 season this coming weekend.
The Bobcats will host the second weekend of the Texas State tournament at Bobcat Softball Stadium. Be sure to watch and listen to Texas State Bobcat Softball on ESPN+ and KTSW 89.9.
