SAN MARCOS — The Texas State Bobcats softball team took on the Tulsa Golden Hurricanes Friday afternoon and came up short 5-2.

There was nothing pretty about this one. A normally defensively sound Bobcats team tallied three errors over the seven innings of play. Starting pitcher Karsen Pierce only went two innings before being replaced after a few batters into the top of the 3rd. Pierce allowed three runs on four hits and a walk on her afternoon. Analisa Soliz and Jessica Mullins each came in to pitch three and two innings respectively. Neither of them fared much better than Pierce, each giving up one run a piece.

On the opposite side of the diamond, the Golden Hurricanes clicked on all cylinders. Starting pitcher Maura Moore looked great and dealt through her 6 1/3 innings of work, allowing only two earned runs on a whopping 145 pitches thrown. Moore struck out eight Bobcats in her most enduring career start.

Offensively, the Bobcats didn’t have the worst day at the plate, it was just so hard to get anything going against the dominant Moore who didn’t let up until the very end. Down three runs entering the second inning, the Bobcats rallied for two runs. A single from JJ Smith single and a Megan Kelner double each brought in a run to bring their deficit down to one.

They were shut out from there and didn’t even get more than one runner into scoring position again past the second inning. The Golden Hurricanes didn’t have to worry about doing too much with the bats with their starting pitcher doing her best to not need a lot of run support. Tulsa still rallied for five runs across the seven innings of play. Designated Player Haley Morgan dropped two RBIs in her second inning double, along with single RBIs coming from Claira Skaggs and Kennedy Cramer.

As the weekend goes on, the Bobcats look to finish off the Texas State tournament on Sunday against Texas Tech at 2pm. Catch the coverage for the game at KTSW 89.9.
