It’s Flu season bobcats! As we return to campus, there are a lot of different opportunities for sickness to form and spread around. Dormitories are also known for assisting in the quick spread of sickness as well, given it’s a crowded space filled with people.
So here are a few methods to prevent the spread and contraction of contagious illnesses this Spring semester.
The Flu or Influenza can be easily combated by getting a flu vaccine each year which is suggested by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Another way to prevent contraction is by social distancing, covering your coughs/sneezes along with basic hygiene such as washing your hands after eating or using the restroom.
Still, many are confused by just how the Flu spreads and creates such an issue. According to the CDC, experts believe that the flu virus spreads mainly by tiny droplets made when people with the flu cough, sneeze or even speak.
This is why it is primarily suggested to get the vaccine or stay home because of how severe it can become.
Additionally, Director Sarah Doss of the Texas State Student Health Center says most people experience upper respiratory symptoms (runny nose, cough, etc.) as well as some body aches or fever.
“Some persons [those with asthma or diabetes, for example] are at higher risk for severe illness with the flu. If you have concerning symptoms or are at high risk, please seek medical care,” Doss said.
Most people believe that the Flu is a sickness that’s temporary, however, it can become serious if you have pre-existing health issues such as asthma and diabetes.
“Flu season is not over yet, and sometimes flu spreads in Texas as late as April,” Doss said.
However, there is another viral virus creeping up on us this spring semester as well. It’s a much more known virus that has two names. The Stomach bug or as doctors call it Norovirus.
What is Norovirus and what does it do to our bodies?
Norovirus is a sickness that is monitored and watched heavily by the CDC.
Much like the flu, Norovirus can be combated with simple basic hygienic methods such as washing your hands before eating and after using the bathroom. In truth “most people typically feel better within 1-3 days.
“If you happen to feel a symptom of dehydration decreased urination, feeling lightheaded when you stand up, please seek medical care,” said Doss.
