Rattlers men’s basketball upset no. 25 Cibolo Steele 74-67 to capture Senior Night victory (2/4/2025)

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Rattler nation showed up and showed out for senior night on Feb. 4 as the Rattlers were able to upset the number 25 ranked squad in Texas, Cibolo Steele, 74-67.

Guard Cash Good and forward Josiah Hollmon led the way for the Rattlers in scoring with 21 points each. Both athletes also combined for eight rebounds and six assists. Donovan Riddick trailed close with 20 points while collecting 5 rebounds. 

Rattler head coach Dan Miller spoke about the importance of the victory for the senior class.

“It meant a lot for our seniors to get this one, obviously we’re disappointed we didn’t make the playoffs this year. We talked about the goal of still having a winning record and we had to beat a [top] Texas ranked Steele team to maintain that goal.”

Miller continued by signifying how happy he was for his team to have a memory with this type of significance tied to it. 

“I am happy we have this moment because we just didn’t get these moments against some really good teams where we weren’t able to get over the top in the second half,” Miller said. “We really needed this moment and I am happy that the guys were able to stick with it for four quarters.”

Coach Miller concluded by speaking on the importance of their last game on the road against Canyon. 

“Canyon came in here [on our homecourt] and beat us, and they did a great job,” Miller said. “One of our goals was to have a winning record and we go into this game 17-17 so I know our guys will play hard and it is an important game for us.”

The Rattlers started the opening quarter hot going on a 10-4 run out of the gate with Cash Good knocking down a couple early buckets. The Rattlers held a seven point at 20-13 lead at the end of the first quarter. 

Steele started the second quarter on an 8-0 scoring run and took their first lead early in the second quarter at 21-20. A back and forth end to the second half saw the Rattlers up by three at 33-30 at the break. 

Back to back Josiah Hollmon three point jumpers put the Rattlers up double digits by a score of 41-31 early in the third quarter. The Steele Knights were able to fight back and cut the lead to five at 55-50 heading into the fourth quarter. 

The Knights were able to tie the game at 61 apiece with two free throws midway through the fourth quarter, but the Rattlers closed the game on a 13-6 run to close out the upset bid and senior night win.

This win improves the Rattlers record to 17-17 overall and 3-8 in district play. The Rattlers finish out the season with a 5-7 record at home with the most notable win coming here against the Steele Knights. 

The Rattlers will close out their 2024-2025 campaign when they go on the road to face the Canyon High School Cougars on Tuesday, Feb. 11 at 7:00 PM.
