From its opening in 2022, Rachel McCartney has carefully cultivated a creative space for all things vintage with Old Soul Exchange located in San Marcos’ beloved square. The self-proclaimed “hippie stop” has now turned into a safe space for lovers of retro fashion, music, film and even just straight oddities.

One of the first places I visited off campus as a new freshman coming to Texas State was Old Soul Exchange. I originally came in because of their bubbly sign and the beautifully beyond quirky window display, but I stayed for all the hidden gems inside. The inside is almost chaotic in the best way possible. With everything from a charm bar and old trolls dolls to the most gorgeous vintage coats and mystery movies in the back, this store enchanted me – and many others in San Marcos – upon entry.

The most unique must see at Old Soul Exchange is their charm bar. The shop sells charms, chains and other jewelry making necessities — an absolute dream for any crafty jewelry lover. Not so crafty? Old Soul Exchange will assemble your one-of-a-kind piece while you continue to shop for other treasures. The combinations are endless with an array of charms including sleek and chic metal to big and bold colorful pieces! The same goes for the chains, different metals, lengths and styles. The charm bar makes a perfect fully custom and meaningful gift for a friend, partner, family member or even just yourself.

Aside from the prized charm bar, the overall vibe that has been created within Old Soul Exchange is like no other. The store is more than just a shop, it’s a place that lives for authentic self-expression. From the walls to the floor, color is spilling everywhere. Spilling into its customers and their imaginative souls.

The displays make it obvious that all are welcome through their large selection and varying styles of vintage clothing, quirky accessories and some totally retro room decor. Inside there is something that is sure to resonate with everyone. After finding the item, the checkout offers free zines, postcards, bookmarks and more all created by others in the San Marcos area. The free promotion of other creatives beautifully supports the store’s mission: to live authentically while practicing sustainability by buying second-hand and supporting small businesses.

Even if shopping may not be in your budget right now or maybe your closet is already jam packed, Old Soul Exchange buys vintage clothing from Harley Davidson, denim and even old San Marcos or Texas State merch. More information can be found via their instagram for policies, accepted brands and how to make an appointment.

Nothing to sell either? You are sure to leave Old Soul Exchange with a new found inspiration, even without purchase. The next time you find yourself wandering the square searching for something new, Old Soul Exchange is a must see whether it’s with your friends or by yourself.
