Late Surge From Gonzaga Hands The Bobcats Second Loss of the Season

SAN MAROCS, Texas — The Texas State Bobcats fell to the Gonzaga Bulldogs 5-1 Saturday afternoon in game two of the three-game series. 

The Bobcats struck first in the second inning off a fielder’s choice by center fielder Samson Pugh, allowing shortstop Dawson Park to score. 

The Bobcats held onto the lead until the seventh inning, when Gonzaga first basemen Tommy Eisenstat reached on a fielder’s choice bringing in Luca DiPaolo.  

With two outs, Noah Meffert doubled to left-center, bringing in three more runs for the Bulldogs. 

The Bulldogs added an insurance run in the eighth inning after Bo Shinkle was hit by a pitch by Bobcat pitcher Braylen Timmins with the bases loaded, allowing Kainoa Santiago to score. 

The Bobcats’ starting pitcher was freshman Nolan Moore, who pitched six shutout innings, allowing three hits and striking out four batters. 

Head Coach Steven Trout had high praise for Moore after his outing. 

“Moore was phenomenal. That’s big-time stuff for any age,” said Trout. “Definitely a start wasted there, but that’s a huge mark for him.” 

Texas State had only three hits during the game, coming from Dawson Park, Jaquae Stewart and Chase Mora. 

“You’re not going to win a lot of baseball games with three hits,” said Trout. 

 The weekend series is tied 1-1 and game three will be played Feb. 21 with first pitch scheduled for 1:00 p.m..
