Bobcats Push No. 1 Texas to the Brink in Tight Defensive Battle

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State went toe-to-toe with No. 1 Texas in a tightly contested matchup, turning Wednesday’s game into a low-scoring defensive battle that came down to execution. 

The Bobcats set the tone early behind Maddy Azua, who kept the Longhorn offense in check through the first few innings. Texas struggled to generate consistent contact, managing limited opportunities while Azua worked efficiently in the circle. 

Texas State broke through in the third inning with a patient and opportunistic approach at the plate. Sami Hood led off with a single, followed by a walk from Keely Williams. Karmyn Bass added another base hit to load the bases and apply pressure. 

The Bobcats capitalized shortly after, as a defensive miscue by Texas allowed two runs to score, giving Texas State a 2-0 advantage without the need for an extra-base hit. 

Texas responded in the fourth inning, taking advantage of a pair of Bobcat errors to bring in a run and cut the deficit to one. Despite the setback, Texas State remained composed defensively and prevented any further damage. 

From there, both teams settled into a rhythm. Fly balls and routine plays highlighted a strong defensive showing on both sides, with neither lineup able to find a breakthrough late in the game. 

Emma Strood entered in the final frame and delivered a clean inning, retiring the Longhorns in order to keep Texas State within striking distance. 

While the final result favored Texas, the Bobcats showed they can compete with the top team in the nation, matching them pitch-for-pitch and forcing a close contest throughout. 

Head coach Ricci Woodard hinted that this may not be the last meeting between the two programs this season. 

“We’re not currently scheduled to play them again until next year,” Woodard said. “But we’ve talked about possibly adding a game. They’re short a few games and we’ve lost some due to weather, so we may look at picking one up in April.”
