SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas State Bobcats suffered a crushing 2-1 defeat against Marshall after the offense continued to struggle with only three players registering a hit for the Cats.
Maddy Azua stepped back in the circle after throwing for 10 strikeouts the night before for the Bobcats. It was a rougher day at the office for Azua as she only pitched 2.2 Innings and had given up two hits, four walks, but had two strikeouts.
She did a decent job at keeping the Herd at bay before Emma Strood came in and saved the Bobcats after Azua had loaded the bases before her exit. Strood would also pitch for 2.2 innings and had kept the Bobcats in the game despite the offense only having one hit through five innings.
The inevitable would come as Marshall finally broke the deadlock as Sydney Burko delivered a solo home run to left field to give the Thundering Herd a 1-0 lead at the top of the fifth inning.
The Herd tacked on a couple more hits and would extend their lead to two before the Bobcats got the final out.
Texas State would remain scoreless until the bottom of the sixth when Sydney Harvey recorded her second hit of the day as she singled to left field, she would advance to second due to an error.
Aiyana Coleman brought her home as she delivered a line drive to left field to help the Bobcats cut the lead to one and make the scoreline 2-1.
The Bobcats would go scoreless for the remainder of the inning but would keep the Herd at bay and allow them to remain within reaching distance of Marshall heading into the bottom of the final inning.
In a last ditch effort the Cats would make adjustments to the bottom of their batting order to try and generate any kind of offense. It would be in vain as all they could muster was one hit and would fall to Marshall in a 2-1 defeat on throwback night.
Coach Woodard spoke on the loss today, “We just didn’t make the adjustments when we needed to and couldn’t get above the ball.”
After taking game one of the series the Bobcats now drop and even the series at 1-1. Coach Woodard shared her thoughts heading into tomorrow’s finale. “Yeah shouldn’t have to motivate them, they are gonna be after us and if we aren’t after them then there’s something wrong with us.”
Texas State will look to try and close out Marshall and take the series tomorrow for their early morning finale in San Marcos.
