Bobcats Football Drop I-35 Rivalry to UTSA

SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Bobcats lost a closely contested match to UTSA Saturday in a 31-26 contest. Texas State looked like they could have cruised to victory after being up 17-7 at halftime. But UTSA was undeterred as they outscored the Bobcats 23-9 in the second half en route to the victory.

There were a couple heroes on the day for Texas State despite the loss. The Bobcats were able to run the ball for 289 yards with Torrance Burgess Jr. rushing for 149 yards on 17 carries. Davian Jackson also had 99 yards himself with a touchdown in the first half. Kylen Evans led the way for the receivers with 96 yards. Chris Dawn Jr. also had a touchdown on the day.

The Bobcats were plagued with the turnover bug, turning the ball over 3 times including a fumble on the last play of the game that secured the win for Roadrunners. Brad Jackson threw for two interceptions, with one of them coming off the hands of Kylen Edwards.

In the post game presser, Coach Kinne was asked about the highs and lows of the game, more specifically the great day rushing the ball. When asked how he felt about the effort despite the loss, Kinne said.

“It’s unfortunate that you run the ball that well, usually that equals a win. Turnovers…can’t have the turnovers. It was nice to be able to run the ball, we felt like we could do that coming into the game. Unfortunate to run like that and not get the win.”

After a few miscues Saturday, Kinne was also asked about what he is going to say to the guys to help them try and turn things around, especially after a very winnable game.

“We just got to get back to work. Probably one of the weirdest games I’ve been a part of to be honest with you. Just a little off, we had some guys in different situations and you have the 4th downs at the end. Like you said the highs and the lows, just gotta go back to work, can’t let this one define us. It’s a big one but it’s not the end all be all and we have a really good team coming in here next week so we have to get back on track somehow, someway.”

The heroes for UTSA were Owen McCown, David Amador II, Cameron Upshaw Jr., Zach Morris, and Mehki Anderson. Owen McCown had 214 passing yards with a touchdown. He also led UTSA to 5-6 on 4th down conversions. David Amador II was able to complete a long 44 yard bomb to Mehki Anderson for a touchdown on a double pass play that completely flipped the momentum of the game in UTSA’s favor.

Cameron Upshaw Jr. and Zach Morris were able to pick off Brad Jackson to set up favorable drives for the offense as UTSA had 10 points off turnovers.

The Bobcats next play the University of North Texas next Saturday, the 19th of September. That game will kick off at 11:00 a.m. at UFCU Stadium in San Marcos.
