While many college students will be soaking up the sun this week, there will be a group of Bobcats preparing for a big event that takes place after spring break. Bobcat Build is a student run organization; it’s run for students by students. Their mission is to give back to the community of San Marcos for all of their support given towards Texas State University.
Bobcat Build members work throughout the school year to prepare for the big event which takes place on March 23. The big event allows other members from other organizations to participate and give back as well. Members of Bobcat Build are those who prepare the job sites that will be worked at the big event. The members are also required to go to the different job sites and evaluate what tasks need to be done. The work can be anything from raking someone’s yard to cleaning out swampy areas of San Marcos. The whole idea is to work on community based projects as a way to give one big thanks.
This is Bobcat Build recruitment chair Yadira Vizcaya’s third year helping with bobcat build. She joined bobcat build after her friends dragged her to a meeting where she would end up making friends and familiarizing herself with the organization. After her first year, Vizcaya took on the position of a Director of Bobcat Build.
I really enjoyed the kind of the vibe they had and the whole purpose of the organization of putting on this huge event to give back to give back to the community of San Marcos.
Considering that the big event takes place following the week of Spring Break, most of the preparations are done during that week. Vizcaya has devoted her time during her break to help this organization.
Being my last spring break here at Texas State, it doesn’t bother me having to go to school when everyone else is out having fun at the beach. But knowing that I am helping out for a really great cause satisfies me the most. Bobcat Build a big event that students put on just to say thank you for all the support that we get from the community of San Marcos. Sometimes we forget the unconditional support we receive on an everyday basis. So being part of the whole picture is just a really great feeling.
While being in this organization Vizcaya plans to help promote Bobcat Build and make sure more students can have a well-known knowledge of the organization.
It’s not just an event, it is a student organization. A lot of people think of Bobcat Build of just being this huge event we have in the Spring, but there’s a big planning committee behind it all.
Whether you are at the beach right now or at LBJ working, hopefully you are enjoying your break from classes. Bobcats across campus get to enjoy their Spring break and do what they love. Accepting the differences and encouraging one another to do what inspires them plays a key role in achieving such a diverse group of students at Texas State. We can definitely applaud the members of Bobcat Build for acquiring a tremendous task for a greater cause.
