Thomas Calder’s moniker The Trouble With Templeton has grown from a solo act, a duo, a trio, to now a five-piece that has just released a five track EP Six Months In A Cast. The Australian folk band is still spearheaded by Thomas’ melodic acoustic guitar playing, and dark ethereal crooning vocals. The title-track, the first song off the EP, is anchored by a rolling drumbeat and rhythm guitar. Yet, the single takes flight during the climatic chorus with Calder’s beautifully and franticly sung lyrics “Fate/ Oh, I wouldn’t believe in it/ If I knew better than I do”. It’s at this point, with the combination of somber lyrics and vigorous vocal dexterity, his voice mirrors a pristine resembles of that of the great Thom Yorke. The four remaining tracks do not nearly resemble the same tempo and energy as their predecessor, but they are fueled with the same stirring emotive and lucid instrumentation. “Old Habits”, “Home”, and “Tired” all utilize simple guitar melodies, sprinkled in with the occasional piano, tambourine and classic bells that build around Thomas’ sincere vocals. The formula yields what is an honest and simple effort for The Trouble With Templeton that’s is not easily captured with most bands today.
